Todd Hills | co-Founder & Managing Partner
Todd Hills is a Colorado native and a 25-year veteran of the pawn industry. After spending his youth working on a farm in Brighton, Todd was forced to seek outside employment to support his family’s struggling livestock business. Between job searches, Todd decided to pawn his favorite saddle to pay for living costs. In a fortuitous turn of events, he walked out of his local pawnshop with a pawn loan and full-time employment.
Todd spent nearly a decade at US Pawn, a publicly traded pawnshop business across the Denver region. Starting behind the counter as a pawnbroker, Todd climbed to Vice President of Operations before deciding to pursue a more entrepreneurial path. In 1989, Todd and partner Bill Piper opened their first pawnshop in Lafayette, Colorado, using their life savings and money borrowed from friends and family.
Todd & Bill sold their first two pawnshops in 1992 and then spent the next 15 years leveraging that capital to grow and acquire (including a take-private acquisition of US Pawn) a chain of pawnshops operating under the name Jumping Jack Cash in Colorado and Utah. Their pawn business became widely successful, expanding to over 30 different locations at its peak. By May of 2011, EZ Corp had acquired all the locations in both Colorado and Utah for a total of approximately $37,000,000.
In 2009, Todd founded and launched Internet Pawn, Inc. – now known as Pawngo. As the pioneer of the Internet pawn industry, he launched the business as a convenient and discrete alternative to traditional pawnshops. Todd’s vision was to educate a new breed of consumer that can utilize their existing assets to secure a short-term loan – an attractive alternative to incurring more traditional debt and leveraging your future.
Todd’s vision has become a reality. Under his leadership, Pawngo has customers in all 50 states across the US and has a current pawn portfolio of over $3,000,000. Todd has appeared on CNBC, Bloomberg, “The Rock Center” with Brian Williams, in the Wall Street Journal and other media outlets as an expert commentator on the Pawn industry. Todd lives in Parker, Colorado and has four children.
Bill Piper | co-Founder & Managing Partner
Bill Piper is a career entrepreneur and 25-year veteran of the pawn industry. He began his career in the commercial printing industry and had over 50 pawnshops as clients – his introduction to the business. After studying his clients and learning the best – and the worst – of how to run pawnshops, he partnered up with the best operator he knew, Todd Hills, and together they opened their first store in 1989. As noted above, Bill and Todd together have had 3 successful exits to EZ Corp totaling approximately $37,000,000.
Bill has been active in the real estate space and has built homes in Cherry Creek and the Denver area for over 20 years. He also launched Vision Acquisitions in 2007, becoming Colorado’s largest homebuyer in purchasing and selling over 600 homes to date. Additionally, Bill has a commercial real estate portfolio that includes 11 buildings he co-owns with Todd Hills that are currently occupied by EZ Corp pawnshops.
He lives in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado with his wife of 18 years, Miriam, and their three children.
